tips on saving money before christmas

it is getting close to christmas, and you probably plan to spend tons of money on gifts for all your friends and family. but when you realize how little you actually have to spend, you need to come up with a great plan to fix this. here are some tips for saving money:

do you have spotify or another streaming program? well, end your subscription. the library has tons of CDs, all for you to borrow. i do this myself, i go to the library every day and borrow a certain amount of CDs which i save in my music library. this also is great for putting on your ipod. this is also a great way of going to the library and actually staying to read a bit, cause if i am at a library, i do feel that i have to study, at least for a while. and why stream music? streaming tends to never work on trains anyway.

do you collect anything? well, if it is valuable you could trim off your collection. everyone has duplicates of something, and they never use them, so go a head. SELL SELL SELL. i certainly know a few things i could sell out of my collections. luckily those things are at my parents.

do you shop at stores? sign up for their reward program. (a good idea is to create a separate e-mail address for this, because you’ll receive tons of spam.)

do you like making things? this is like the oldest trick in the book. people do enjoy homemade gifts, often more than new things. so start cooking, painting, drawing or whatever you’re the best at.

do you have a lot of stuff? this trick seems kind of rude, but i personally am a huge fan of it. do you have a book you’ve read or a movie you’ve seen that you don’t need anymore, give that away as a gift. people like to get things they know their friends/family likes.

do you like books? well, join this site, where you can swap books for free.

after you’ve done all of that, you’ll feel like this:

i could give you more tips, like: make a shopping list and stick to it, repair your clothes instead of buying new ones and cut up your credit cards, but we all know that those things and they often don’t work.

about: mail

since i was little i’ve loved mail. the feeling of going to the mailbox to see if there was anything for me was one of my favourites. so from an early age i started having pen pals. i put in ads in magazine, like norwegian topp and swedish okej to vary the people that would contact me.

so from when i was like 8-9 years old i had pen pals from both sweden and norway. i also wrote my cousins in the united states.

now, with the internet you can choose to communicate with people all over instantly and there are also many fascinating ways where you can still receive mail. and i thought i would like to share some of those with you.

postcrossing
this might be my favourite type of “receiving mail” at the moment. you send out postcards to people all over the world, and you get postcards back, from other people! in your profile you can ask for a motif, what the people should write about, whatever. and then you just start sending.

reddit
you might not have thought so. but reddit has a lot of funny gift exchanges a lot of the time for people who are interested in everything/some of the things that goes on at reddit. i’ve participated in two, a secret santa one and a lunch box one. the lunch box one is not over yet, so i’m still really excited for that one. and reddit is also funny for everything else.

you can also write an ad on reddit that you want pen pals. they have an own forum for that.

write a prisoner
i’ve tried this several times, but i think that since i lived in norway the letters didn’t reach always reach me. or the prisoners didn’t have enough money to send me letters that often. well. writing to a prisoner is an interesting experience, cause you always hear about it in american movies. the reason i wanted to try it was for a school project, but then i just kept on going. the website is fascinating by itself, you can look at all the people to write to, their photos and their crimes. (i didn’t know that this was allowed).

or you can just stay simple, send postcards to your family and friends when you go on holiday. then you might get ones in return. or you can just mail me, i will be sure to answer!
